Loneliness research and resources

Nearly a million older people in the UK are often lonely. Loneliness is a major issue that is now widely recognised in society today.

Age UK works to combat loneliness through influencing, campaigning and service provision. Our work is underpinned by evidence and data.

Our research explores the extent of loneliness among older people, the impact it has on people's lives, as well as how we can make ageing a less lonely experience.

The difference between loneliness and isolation

Loneliness and isolation are both important to consider in the services that Age UK offers to older people – but they’re not the same thing.

Loneliness

Loneliness is a feeling, related to whether the social contact we have is meaningful to us and meets our emotional needs.

Social isolation

Isolation is being alone, whether or not that's what we want. Someone can be isolated but not feel lonely – and someone can feel lonely even when they're surrounded by people.

Loneliness in later life

How prevalent is loneliness among people aged 50 and over? What factors increase the risk of these people often being lonely? What are the practical steps we can take to help people overcome feelings of loneliness? How can we measure changes in loneliness? And what is Age UK doing to help?

Measuring loneliness

How is loneliness measured across the UK? What does this mean for comparing ‘what works’ from different parts of the UK? How can you combine a direct and indirect measure of loneliness to get a more complete picture of loneliness?

Loneliness and Covid-19

Our reports look at how Covid-19 contributed to the loneliness affecting nearly a million people and makes recommendations for the Government on how best to tackle this challenge. From investing in digital skills to improving transport services and supporting the voluntary sector, we’re calling for a reinvigorated effort to reach and help those who often or always feel lonely.
