Do you worry about what would happen if for some reason you weren't able to make decisions for yourself?
Age UK Selby District is now able to offer support with a new service - drawing up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
An LPA ensures that if you are unable to manage your own affairs, the people you have appointed can manage your financial life on your behalf. It can save a great deal of money and distress and will ensure that, at a time when you may be particularly vulnerable, your affairs will be handled correctly and efficiently.
No-one wants to think about the difficulties that can happen in life but charities like Age UK Selby District are very aware that accidents, strokes, brain injuries, Parkinson's disease and Dementia are all things which can affect someone's ability to make their own decisions which is why we recommend that you plan ahead.
If you lose your mental capacity without an LPA in place, your family will have to apply to the Court of Protection to have a deputy appointed to deal with everyday financial matters. It is a slow and expensive process - often costing thousands of pounds and with solicitors fees it can be even more expensive. But if you already have an LPA in place, that won't be necessary and can have the dual benefit of saving a great deal of money and easing the burden on your relatives.
There are two types of LPA - one which covers Property and Financial Affairs so that those named in the document can deal with paying your bills, managing bank accounts and even buying and selling property for you should it become necessary.
There is also a Health and Welfare LPA which covers decisions about your health and care and maybe deciding where you are to live but this can only be used if someone is incapable of dealing with such matters themselves.
We can offer our Lasting Power of Attorney service at a much lower price than many of our competitors so if you'd like to find out more, please call us in confidence on 01757 704115 and speak to a member of our specially trained staff.
