Caroline Abrahams CBE, Charity Director at Age UK said: “Today’s new figures show pensioner poverty remains a key concern with one in seven –equivalent to 1.7 million older people living in relative low-income poverty after housing costs in 2024/5.
“It’s important to note that it was during 2024/25 that some people lost access to the Winter Fuel Payment, although this has since been further reformed to support more older people with incomes under £35k.
“Higher living costs and expected increases in energy costs later in the year will no doubt be worrying low-income pensioner households right now. Our recent research found that cost of living pressures are still persisting among pensioners, with more than one in four (28%) struggling to manage financially and a concerning 3 million adults over age 66 – saying they found energy bills unaffordable and that was in January - way before the conflict in the Middle East began.
“For any older person who’s living on a low income and worried about affording to heat or power your home this year, we urge you to contact Age UK to see what help is available to you. There are some sources of support and we can help you to access them.”
