Age UK's statement in response to the alarming and rapid rise of flu cases and the Resident Doctor’s strike

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK said: "Australia has just had its worst flu season ever and that's a powerful warning to us here in the UK to take care and get vaccinated if we can. Sometimes we talk about 'having the flu' when really, it's just a cold, but the influenza or flu virus that's circulating here now is a much more serious health threat than that, especially if we are older, have underlying health conditions or compromised immunity.
“The current rapid rise in the number of flu cases is alarming but having our vaccines when they are offered is something we can all do to help avoid serious illnesses. The flu vaccination may not enable us to avoid the virus altogether, but it will definitely reduce its impact. It's the best defence we have and can help save lives, so I urge everyone eligible to come forward for their jabs as soon as they can - it's definitely not too late.
“As we age, we are much more susceptible to flu and other respiratory illnesses. We are also much more likely to live with long-term conditions while at the same time our immune systems are not as able to fight off seasonal viruses and infections as before. This means flu can lead to complications and the need for admission to hospital in severe cases. Older people in poor health can deteriorate rapidly if they are left untreated so early recognition is vital.
"If you are an older person it is important to keep a close eye on any long-term health conditions and seek medical help sooner rather than later if you go down with the virus and become increasingly unwell or concerned about your health for other reasons. Please do contact your GP or speak to a Pharmacist - yes, they are busy but they really do want to hear from you.
"If you or an older person you know is having difficulty breathing, experiencing chest pain or becoming very confused then it is important to seek emergency help via 111 or 999.
“This winter looks like being an especially worrying one for many older people since along with the upsurge in flu there is the possibility of another strike by resident doctors next week - the last thing anyone in ill health needs. Against this miserable context we hope and pray that the resident doctors decide not to exercise their right to withdraw their labour and that the revised deal offered by the Government brings about a permanent end to a dispute that's been going on for far too long."
