Global Council on Brain Health

These days, there’s more and more information available on brain ageing and what we can do to look after our thinking skills as we age. While some of the information is based on sound evidence, some can be confusing or contradictory.

Living longer, living well

Age UK is committed to giving clear and reliable advice about all aspects of ageing. That’s why we’re a founding collaborator in the Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH).

This is an independent group of scientists, doctors, scholars and policy experts from around the world. It was created in 2015 by AARP, the leading not-for-profit organisation for people aged 50+ in the United States.

As we live longer, we want to live our lives to the fullest. So the need for clear, trustworthy information on how we can maintain our brain health and thinking skills as we age is greater than ever – in other words, how can we achieve a “brain-healthy” lifestyle.

Fact, not Fiction

The GCBH aims to provide us all with trusted information. It reviews latest evidence from research from around the world to produce reliable advice on how we can maintain and improve our brain health and thinking skills as we age.

It’s looking at a range of factors that can have an impact, including physical exercise, sleep and social engagement. It boils the research on these factors down to understand:

  • what real-life approaches work best?
  • what steps we can take ourselves to boost our cognitive health?

Global Council on Brain Health reports

The Global Council on Brain Health publishes its findings and recommendations in a series of reports. So far they have reviewed several topics and published their conclusions and recommendations on them.
